Celebrate Family Health and Fitness Day on June 14 with these tips – Brainerd Dispatch

BRAINERD — Every year on the second Saturday in June, communities across the country come together to celebrate Family Health and Fitness Day, a national observance that promotes the importance of physical activity and healthy living for families.

At the YMCA, we believe strong families are the foundation of strong communities — and that wellness is a journey best taken together. This June, we invite families to make the most of this special day (and beyond!) by engaging in activities that encourage movement, togetherness, and fun. Whether you’re looking to get outdoors, move your body, or simply unplug and reconnect, there are plenty of ways to be active together without breaking the bank.

Why family fitness matters

Family health and fitness isn’t just about exercise — it’s about building lifelong habits, boosting mental and emotional well-being, and creating meaningful memories. When families engage in physical activity together, they not only improve their health but also strengthen bonds, encourage communication, and model positive behaviors for kids.

Getting active as a family doesn’t have to involve expensive gym memberships or pricey equipment. In fact, some of the most effective and enjoyable ways to stay active are simple, low-cost, and right outside your front door.

Free and inexpensive activities for families

Here are some ideas to inspire your family’s fitness journey this June:

1. Take a family walk, bike ride or paddle

Exploring your neighborhood, local trails, a nearby park, or our beautiful waterways is a great way to enjoy nature and get your heart pumping. Canoe or kayak out of the Lyman P. White Park in Brainerd.

Make it a scavenger hunt for kids by spotting birds, flowers, or interesting landmarks along the way.

2. Watch for free community events

Many nonprofits in the area host special events or offer free or discounted access during the summer months. It’s a great time to explore events centered around nature, fitness, art, and so much more. Check local event calendars to see what’s planned. The Brainerd YMCA also offers financial assistance for programs and memberships.

3. Create an at-home obstacle course

With a little imagination, your living room or backyard can become an exciting obstacle course. Use cushions, cones, jump ropes, and hula hoops to set up challenges that everyone can try.

4. Host a family fitness challenge

Choose a series of activities — like jumping jacks, planks, or squats—and see who can complete the most in a minute. Keep track and make it a friendly weekly competition with small rewards like choosing the next family movie night pick.

5. Dance it out

Turn up your favorite playlist and have a family dance party. Dancing is a great cardiovascular workout, and it’s guaranteed to bring smiles and laughter to all ages.

6. Gardening together

Planting flowers or starting a vegetable garden teaches kids about nature, responsibility, and nutrition, all while keeping everyone physically engaged.

7. Explore a new park or trail

Make a list of parks or walking trails you haven’t visited yet and plan weekend adventures to explore them. Many state and local parks offer free admission or low-cost family passes.

8. Practice mindful movement

Physical activity isn’t just about intensity—it’s also about balance and flexibility. Try stretching together, doing simple yoga poses, or practicing deep breathing exercises to promote calm and focus.

Build healthy habits year-round

Family Health and Fitness Day is a great starting point but staying active together is something you can enjoy year-round. Consider creating a family activity calendar or setting goals like “30 minutes of movement each day” to keep everyone motivated and involved.

If you’re not sure where to start, the YMCA is here to help. Our mission is to support healthy spirit, mind, and body for all — and that includes the whole family. From youth sports and swim lessons to wellness programs and community events, we offer a wide range of opportunities to help families thrive together.

As we celebrate Family Health & Fitness Day this June, we encourage you to take time for what matters most — your health and your family. Whether you choose a walk in the park, a dance in your living room, or a visit to the Y, the most important thing is that you’re doing it together.

Let’s move, play, and grow — one step, one laugh, one day at a time.
