Discussions are to take place at Gateshead Council on how to allocate £30,000 to improve fitness among women and girls. Gateshead Council’s women and girls committee will meet next week to discuss and support the allocation of £30,000 targeting “physical activity” among the female population.

Council documents state the local authority will work with partners to find where the greatest need for the funding is. A 2022 Gateshead Council report, cited in next week’s meeting documents, stated: “Nationally, 1 in 3 (34%) girls and almost 1 in 2 (42%) women are not active enough for good health. Adults in Gateshead have lower rates of physical activity and higher rates of inactivity than the average for England. Preventable, yet life changing conditions, like obesity and diabetes are increasing.”

The cash forms part of a £1.174m fund, from the then Newcastle and Gateshead Clinical Commissioning Group, to help improve overall health standards. Figures from Gateshead Council’s physical activity strategy 2022-2032, found that 30.3% of women in Gateshead engage in less than 30 minutes of exercise a week, as compared to the national average of 27.8%.

Life expectancy in Gateshead is also below the national average for both men and women. The figures, from the council’s physical activity report, are as follows:

Gateshead:

Male: 77.4

Female: 81.6

England:

Male: 79.4

Female: 83.1

The women and girls committee is scheduled to convene at Gateshead Civic Centre on June 25.
