A new plant-based pizza from Papa Johns, the latest under the chain’s ‘Vegan Works’ line-up, promises to be bigger, bolder, and more indulgent than its predecessor.
Previously, ‘the ‘Vegan Works’ pizza featured meat-free sausage, baby portobello mushrooms, green peppers, onions and black olives.
Now, building on the success of its Vegan Hawaiian Pizza, the chain has collaborated with French vegan brand La Vie to create a vegan pizza with ‘no compromises on flavour’.
And the upgraded vegan pizza toppings truly feature ‘the works’, with three meat alternative toppings, an array of colourful veggies, and a ‘generous helping’ of melty vegan cheese.
What’s on the new Papa Johns Vegan Works pizza?
Papa Johns’ new plant-based pizza features three meat-alternative toppings: smoky La Vie ham, spicy jackfruit pepperoni, and succulent vegan sausages.
And it’s not just about the ‘meat’. The Vegan Works also offers a rainbow of veggie toppings, including mushrooms, red onions, peppers, and olives. This assortment of toppings is loaded onto Papa Johns’ signature dough, along with plenty of gooey vegan Sheese.
The brand says the new pizza is designed to deliver “bold, satisfying flavour without compromise”, with a focus on high-quality ingredients that mimic the taste and texture of traditional meat toppings.
This launch marks the brand’s second major collaboration with La Vie, following the earlier launch of the ‘UK’s first’ Hawaiian Vegan Pizza.
The launch of that ‘controversial’ combination generated significant attention, with some stores reportedly seeing queues for a slice.
Where have all the vegan pizzas gone?
While Papa Johns continues to improve its vegan takeaway options, the same can’t be said for all high street rivals.
Domino’s has recently removed three of its plant-based pizzas from menus across the UK: the Plant-Based American Hot, the Plant-Based Peppy-roni, and the Plant-Based Chick’n Winner.
That leaves just two fully vegan options on the menu: the Plant-Based Margheri-tastic and the Plant-Based Vegi Supreme.
While these veg-heavy pizzas can still make a tasty treat, this means that Domino’s no longer offers a meat-style plant-based protein option among its vegan toppings. However, extra veggies such as olives, jalapeños, or gherkins can be added.
To add to the disappointment, Domino’s has also quietly dropped its plant-based nuggets. However, its popular vegan garlic and herb dip still survives – for now.
The contrast is striking. While Domino’s is stepping back in time in offering only veggie pizzas and plain potato sides to plant-based customers, Papa Johns is storming into the future with innovative toppings, exciting sides, and even vegan desserts on the table.
The new Vegan Works pizza is available now through the Papa Johns website, app, and in store.
