The charming 1900s farmstead, complete with a red barn and barnyard animals, adds to the experience. Beyond plants, the nursery offers a unique selection of garden and home decor.

Detroit Garden Works, Sylvan Lake, Michigan

Sculptures and garden ornaments are the focus of Detroit Garden Works.

Stepping onto the grounds of Detroit Garden Works feels like an encounter with a fashion boutique’s green-thumbed cousin. Garden Works, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Detroit, is the brainchild of veteran landscape and garden designer Deborah Silver, who grafts fine art and style onto the world of horticulture. The storefront serves as main stage for her many creations and finds. While you can buy tools and some plants at the store, the spotlight is on rare sculptures and vintage garden ornaments, sourced both domestically and from European buying trips as well as designed by Silver herself. It’s also a fantastic place to buy beautiful containers, in materials spanning wood, stone, fiber, cast iron, recycled rubber and more. A wrought-iron fence lining the property creates the feel of a private estate. But the door is open to all, whether you need an original sculpture to complement your koi pond or just a stylish sun hat.

Pro Tip: While in the area, check out the Oudolf Garden Detroit on Belle Isle. Created by acclaimed garden designer Piet Oudolf, it’s planted in an inspiring, naturalistic way that offers many lessons for the home gardener.

Avon Gardens, Avon, Indiana

Avon Gardens has more than five acres of display gardens.

Bob Stefko

Before rushing the product tables for your favorite peonies and annuals, take a test stroll. Note where the pink ‘Tranquil Waters’ daylilies complement ‘Incrediball’ hydrangeas near the cascading brook, and how a raised planter elevates the impact of coleus.

West of Indianapolis, Avon Gardens melds inspiring display gardens, retail outlets and events space into one sanctuary. Some structures on the grounds are 200 years old, salvaged from the hog farm that was on the property 40-plus years ago. In the early 1980s, Karen Robbins cleaned up 5 acres of land to create her mini Eden in Indiana—and she moved on-site into the home of her late grandfather. In 2023, Tara Cody and Taylor Doehrman became the new leaders at the garden, continuing Robbins’ legacy and planning new sustainability and education initiatives.

Pro Tip: Visit the gardens in June or July for full bloom, or during evening events to see plants by candlelight. While you’re in the Indianapolis area, check out botanical gardens at Newfields and Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Garden.

Bowood Farms, St. Louis

You can nearly grasp the full circle of life within the walls of the Bowood campus in St. Louis. Many plants for sale at the retail center started as seeds on the fourth-generation Bowood family farm in Clarksville. The bright, sunny restaurant at the nursery, Bowood by Niche, serves breakfast and lunch to customers as they revise their final shopping lists.

Bowood made its name as a wholesale perennial grower for nearly two decades before reviving a decaying warehouse and auto shop in the city. That property now houses artful arrangements of plants and shrubs in an outdoor lot and a one-stop shop for home and garden wares. It has also become a gathering space for events on topics like terrarium building.

Pro Tip: St. Louis’ crown of culture and outdoor life, Forest Park, lies 1 mile southwest of Bowood Farms. Museums, the Jewel Box greenhouse and the Saint Louis Zoo anchor the 1,300-acre park. One mile east of Forest Park, the veggie-forward Vicia restaurant showcases produce like turnip greens, carrot tops or other underutilized vegetables.

Arnold’s is known for its extensive selection of “prairie tough” plants including many native Kansas perennials. In the 1970s, George and Rita Arnold moved to his grandparents’ farmstead, with its century-old red barn, to farm. Eventually, they turned their gardening hobby into a full-fledge greenhouse business with a destination garden center. Arnold’s prides itself on collaborating with other Kansas businesses, carrying local products like Alfalfa Mulch and seed packets from The Buffalo Seed Company.

Gee Farms, Stockbridge, Michigan

Located 70 miles west of Detroit, this family-run nursery spans 40 acres and specializes in rare and unusual conifers and deciduous trees and shrubs. Gary and Kaye Gee started by commercially growing cucumbers and peppers before transitioning to nursery stock. Today, nearly 500 acres are dedicated to trees and shrubs, with an additional 300 acres in agricultural farming. Gary is a world-renowned grafter, producing almost 20,000 conifer and deciduous plants annually. His passion for conifers has led him to become deeply involved with the American Conifer Society and similar organizations worldwide. Gary’s search for unique tree mutations, known as “brooms” and “sports,” has become one of his favorite pastimes, fueling his lifelong dedication to the art of grafting. Explore 23 greenhouses packed with vegetable plants, bedding plants, and an extensive selection of nursery specimens, plus a market, complete with bakery, local produce and hand-dipped ice cream.

Pro Tip: While in the Detroit area, also check out Ray Wiegand’s Nursery, Bordine’s and Eastern Market.

Here, you’ll find every plant and shrub in the Proven Winners collection, including many bred and grown at nearby Walters Gardens, a Proven Winners supplier. Last summer, I was delighted to find some new hardy varieties of kniphofias and agapanthus. I also loved the massive container displays and display gardens showcasing many of the plants for sale. As an added bonus, Garden Crossings has a mail-order business so you can order more of the top performers the next season.
