Tips on trimming your shrubbery
Landscaper and expert pruner Curtis Short will show how to make kinder cuts on your shrubbery during a talk Oct. 24 before the Santa Rosa Garden Club.
With slides and a hands-on demonstration, Short will share techniques for pruning from the inside out, leading to a more sculpted and attractive form. An advocate of thinning rather than shearing shrubs, Short will give his free talk at 1:30 p.m. Non-members are welcome.

* Composting: Turning Straw into Gold: Learn the latest in approved methods for turning yard trimmings and food scraps into nutrient-rich compost. * Transforming Your Lawn into a Perennial Garden: Fall is the time to get rid of your water-wasting lawn and replace it with a perennial garden. Master Gardener Sue Lovelace will give a step-by-step presentation on how she transformed her own lawn. Moonshine and Madness plant show and sale
If you missed the Graton Community Club’s Spring Flower Show they will reprise the floral festivities for fall with “Moonshine and Madness.”
On Oct. 21 and 22 volunteers will deck out the old clubhouse with flower displays, locally grown plants for sale, hand-crafted items and collectibles to purchase. Show goers can buy lunch, including beverage and dessert, for $10 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The show, which benefits college scholarships, runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Admission is free. The clubhouse is located at 8996 Graton Road in downtown Graton.

Open gardens at Russian River Rose Co.
Take your last whiff of roses for the season at the Russian River Rose Company during two weekends of open garden events.
On Oct. 22 and 23 and 29 and 30 the Healdsburg nursery offers talks on how to use rose hips — the seed pods of the plant — for seasonal decorations, and in teas and in jams. Materials will be available to purchase for creating your own. There will also be a table displaying the many types of rose hips found in the garden.

Free Fall in the Garden Workshop with Haro
The Sonoma Garden Park is hosting a free Fall in the Garden Workshop with Master Gardener Pauline Haro from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 22. Haro will talk about why this is the best time to plant shrubs, trees and bulbs as well divide perennials. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will also be a mask making workshop for children.
