Vinod, who also guided Nita Ambani through her fitness journey, frequently shares expert health and nutrition advice with his followers. In a recent Instagram video, the trainer addressed a common question faced by fitness enthusiasts – what to eat before and after a workout to truly maximise your efforts?

“Confused about what to eat before and after a workout? Let celebrity fitness expert Vinod Channa guide you with the perfect pre-workout and post-workout meals to fuel your body and boost recovery! Build muscle faster, recover better and get real results with the right nutrition,” he wrote in the caption.

Pre-workout nutrition: Timing is everything

In the video, Channa breaks down the science of pre-workout meals in simple terms, focusing on digestion and energy availability.

“I will tell you how to plan your meal before and after a workout. Before a workout, you need energy and it depends on how much time you have,” he said in Hindi. “If you have half an hour then you need something that can be digested quickly. So fruits are the best source. They will be easily digested. Even if you have half an hour, it will get digested and be available in your body for energy,” he said.

However, if you’re planning to eat earlier, about one to one and a half hours before your workout, Channa recommends a more balanced approach. “Then you can eat both protein and carbohydrates,” he advised.

This combo ensures that your body has a steady source of energy throughout your workout and helps prevent muscle fatigue.

Post-workout meals for recovery and balance

Just as important as what you eat before you hit the gym is what you consume after. According to Channa, the focus post your workout should be on replenishment and repair. “After a workout, you always need to have a combination of protein, carbohydrates, and fibre,” he explained. “Your digestion will be good because of the fibre, carbs will help recover your energy and protein will aid in muscle recovery.”

He also cautioned against the common mistake of relying solely on protein. “If you eat only protein and no carbohydrates, then the protein will be utilised for energy and nothing will be left for recovery. So, while planning, always take scientific guidance.”
