Seniors Groove on National Older Adult Health & Fitness Day


Thousands of seniors in New York City got their groove on in Foley Square in honor of National Older Adult Health and Fitness Day.

New York City’s Foley Square on Wednesday was alive with movement and laughter as nearly 1,000 older adults came together to celebrate National Older Adult Health and Fitness Day.

The event, hosted by the NYC Department for the Aging, highlighted the importance of staying active for healthy aging while promoting year-round programs at older adult centers citywide.

“It is vital that our older adults have every opportunity to stay healthy and active, but also, to have fun,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. “Every year, we look forward to bringing out more of our older adults for ‘National Older Adult Health and Fitness Day’ as we move, dance, and laugh. We are laser-focused on delivering resources and supports to older New Yorkers as we work to ensure that they are able to live and thrive in New York City.”

Participants began the day with bend and stretch exercises aimed at improving flexibility and mobility. These movements support everyday tasks like reaching overhead or safely crossing the street. The celebration also featured a Laughter Yoga session, combining breathing and movement techniques known to reduce stress, combat social isolation, and enhance mental and physical well-being.

“This event is a celebration of movement, connection, and possibility,” said NYC Aging Commissioner Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez. “Exercise is essential to aging well. Whether it’s stretching, walking, or laughing with neighbors, every step supports independence and well-being. As we mark 50 years of service to older New Yorkers, we remain committed to providing opportunities for healthy aging in every neighborhood through our centers, programs, and partnerships.”
