The Unison at Veiner Centre is celebrating Senior Health & Fitness Day with a range of motivational activities to help aging adults support their health goals during the nation’s largest health and wellness event held May 28.
Next Wednesday the centre will host several activities to stay active, including line dancing, yoga classes, pickleball and table tennis.
This year marks the 32nd annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day that encourages local governments and senior centres to host events to promote well-being that can include exercise demonstrations, health presentations and mini-health fairs.
In June the Veiner Centre will also host a Steady Moves workshop with Erynn and a Fitness in the Park exercise session.
Golf and Pickleball fitness
Additionally the Veiner Center is running a workshop designed to enhance flexibility, strength, agility and focusing on areas that will positively impact your golf and pickleball game. The Exercises and Stretches for Golf & Pickleball Workshop runs an hour starting at 1 p.m on June 4 at the Strathcona Centre, and will cover the benefits of a targeted fitness routine tailored to these sports.
The cost for the workshop is $5 for members and $10 for non-members, and questions can be directed to 403-529-8307.
Conflict management skills
Next week the Veiner Centre will host a workshop to provide aging adults the tools to articulate thoughts and emotions clearly and embrace assertiveness and clarity in conversations.
The Positive/Assertive Communication Skills workshop runs May 28 in the boardroom beginning at 1 p.m. Participants will enhance their communications skills through the hour-and-a-half-long workshop.
“Learn to handle various conflicts and turn challenges into growth opportunities in this engaging session,” reads a promotional advertisement.
Registration is required for the workshop that will include free coffee and muffins.
Fall prevention trivia
The Veiner Centre is hosting an interactive event that will offer tips for preventing falls, and offer seniors an opportunity to win “fabulous prizes.”
On June 4 the centre will host a drop-in fall-prevention trivia event in partnership with Alberta Health Services that will allow attendees to learn, ask questions and share stories with AHS.
No registration is needed for the event that begins at 10:30 a.m in the South MP Room.
Aspen Crossing Train Ride
Later this summer the Veiner Centre will continue expanding its bus tours with the announcement of a day trip to the Mossleigh grain elevators, the last remaining original elevator rows in the country.
The day-trip tour includes a three-hour train ride/tour alongside the historic elevators, a train robbery reenactment as well as a meal.
The bus will leave at 8 a.m. and return at 6 p.m. on Aug. 23. The cost for the day trip is $155 for members and $165 for non-members, and there is a maximum of 56 seats available.
