Vancouver vegetarian restaurant mourns loss of popular plant-based meat product

Those who enjoy plant-based burgers, hot dogs, and other meat products were most likely heartbroken when the major plant-based food producer, Yves Veggie Cuisine, announced it was being discontinued and leaving grocery store shelves.

“We couldn’t have done it without YOU! From veggie dogs to deli slices, you welcomed us into your kitchens and made Yves part of your journey toward delicious, meat-free living. For that, we’re endlessly grateful,” wrote Yves on its website.

Many individuals shared how much they would miss Yves, with one person even saying, “I seriously hope you reconsider discontinuing the most prominent meat alternative brand in Canada.”

However, it’s not just grocery store shoppers who are mourning the loss of Yves, as one of Vancouver’s major players in the vegetarian restaurant scene shared that it too would miss the popular plant-based meat products: Budgie’s Burritos.

“As you probably have heard, Yves has been discontinued and we are very sad about it,” said Budgie’s on an Instagram post with the song ‘I Will Remember You’ by Sarah McLachlan playing. “The Yves veggie ground round was a part of The Poser burrito for nearly twenty years!”

Budgie’s has been serving the Vancouver community since it opened in 2005. It features an entirely vegetarian menu, which can easily be made vegan with cheese and sour cream substitutes.

The Poser, one of the stars on Budgie’s menu, consists of veggie ground round with homemade fajita seasoning, rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, salsa and green cabbage.

However, Budgie’s added that customers had nothing to fear and that the Poser would remain on menus with a new ground round product that is also free from gluten ingredients.

“Let us know what you think!” said Budgie’s.

Many took to the comments of Budgie’s announcement to share how much they would miss Yves.

Rest in Peace, Yves. You were there for me [in] the 90s, and I thought you’d always be there. I guess I’ve been a bit busy lately seeking other grounds and exploring different cuisines. I’m sorry for the lack of commitment, I just always assumed you’d be there. Thanks for being my first. I’ll always remember you,” said one user.

“Noooooo! The Poser was my go-to burrito, but I’ll head by soon to give the newbie a try,” shared another.

“Now it’s like the poser is posing the poser. New life given to the name,” added a third.

When it comes to Yves, it has since stopped producing its veggie products, but you may still be able to find it on shelves while stores sell the rest of their stock.

Entrepreneur Yves Potvin founded what would become Yves Veggie Cuisine in 1985, touting the world’s first veggie dog created out of soy.

Potvin sold the company to The Hain Celestial Group in 2001. He would also go on to create the plant-based food company Gardein and is the current president and owner of Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts.
